Please attribute the following to WA Police Union President Harry Arnott:

This morning’s cheap political stunt by the McGowan Government is perplexing and disappointing.

For the WA Police Union and our members to be advised Government was providing them with a pay rise via a media release is about as disrespectful as the $1,000 they have offered.

At no stage in negotiations has Government indicated or mentioned that this course of action was being considered.

Our position is quite simple. $1,000 is disrespectful and this decision by the McGowan Government reeks of desperation and simply adds more confusion in a challenging and uncertain time.

Three months ago this Government had no time for police officers in this State. Now, in the face of the current health crisis, they are expecting our members to put themselves at incredible risk and they pull a cheap political stunt trying to buy off police officers.

If Government is serious about reaching an outcome to finalise this negotiation, it needs to provide our members with an additional 40 hours accruable annual leave – a position which has very clearly been outlined to Government by the Union.
