The WA Police Union believes the State Government’s $96.5 million investment to upgrade police facilities is a good start after years of neglect.

President Harry Arnott said the announcement to build a new Fremantle Police Station was well overdue and will provide police officers with a safe and secure workplace.

“In March this year, three police vehicles were set on fire outside the current Fremantle Police Station and we have raised the need for a new station for several years with successive governments,” Mr Arnott said.

“Our Members will now have a fit for purpose station rather than having to make do with an old converted bank which provides our Members with significant challenges each and every day.”

Mr Arnott said this investment in policing was a good start however, the State Government also needed to make a significant investment in additional police numbers.

“The new facilities and upgrades are certainly required but we need more police officers to ensure these stations are appropriately resourced,” he said.

“We commend the McGowan Government on this announcement and we look forward to further investments to support the hard working police officers of this State.”
