The WA Police Union has welcomed the additional 800 police officers included in the State Budget.

The new police officers will be delivered over the next four years and are in addition to 150 committed during COVID-19.

Union President Harry Arnott said the boost to police numbers was timely but would still need to be topped up in the coming years.

"We have been pushing really hard for 1,000 police officers so the additional 800 is great start by the McGowan Government," Mr Arnott said.

"Police numbers were largely neglected by both major parties at the last State election, so it was imperative that the government delivered a significant boost in this budget.

"We need 200 officers at Perth Police Centre immediately, there are currently 400 police officers fighting the pandemic which leaves 200 from this announcement to be spread across the State and into specialist areas. This boost will certainly assist our Members on the frontline but government needs to find a way to deliver another 200.

“Our fear is that regional WA might miss out on getting much needed additional police because we didn’t get the number of officers we desperately needed.”
