WA Police Union President George Tilbury has supported the extension of Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan’s contract for another three-year term.

Mr Tilbury said he welcomed today’s announcement by Premier Colin Barnett.

“The WA Police Union supports Commissioner O’Callaghan’s reappointment and the Union looks forward to working with him for another three years,” Mr Tilbury said.

“Now Commissioner O’Callaghan has been reinstated, we call on him to immediately appoint a second Deputy Commissioner.”

Mr Tilbury said the current system of employing one Deputy Commissioner and an Executive Director was clearly not working.

“I have expressed my views about changing the current structure with Police Minister Liza Harvey and the Commissioner.

I believe having another sworn officer at the Deputy Commissioner level will benefit the Agency and our Members,” Mr Tilbury said.

“They bring first-hand knowledge and experience of serving on the frontline to the position and know what it is like for our officers on a day-to-day basis.

“Once again, I would like to congratulate Commissioner O’Callaghan and look forward to working with him in the future.”
