Earlier this month, 18 riders gathered together for the annual Remembering Mates Century bike ride - commemorating the service and sacrifice of fallen police officers.
Participants braved the cool temperatures in the morning and tackled the 100km round trip from Joondalup Police Academy including some laps at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo.
Riders raised money for WA Police Legacy to help support the parents, widows, widowers and children of fallen police officers.
Senior Sergeant Bill Darby, who has participated in the ride both years, said it is a fantastic and fun event with a strong message.
“This year’s ride was a well conducted and really great day and I must congratulate all the riders on their commitment to take part,” he said. “As we draw closer to Police Remembrance Day, it is important to remember the men and women in blue who are no longer here today.”
He said the ride highlighted the importance of remembering the fallen and their commitment and sacrifice to the WA policing family – something that was close to his heart.
“I have been in the job for 37 years and over the time I have lost friends and colleagues,” he said.
“This ride is one of many ways to continue to raise awareness of those not here today and also raise funds for WA Police Legacy.”
He encourages people to join in next year’s ride.
“It’s a fun day for a good cause and a great way to make connections in the police family.”
Police Remembrance Day is this Sunday, 29 September 2019.
