The WA Police Union has been providing police officers with industrial and legal support for more than 100 years. WAPU acts as a passionate advocate, lobbying for better conditions and protections on behalf of police officers and police auxiliary officers.

WAPU has been very successful in achieving great outcomes for its Members, who include police officers, police auxiliary officers, cadets and recruits. We have 98 per cent membership of all officers across the State.

The External Media Communications Manager is responsible for managing WAPU’s media and communications, press-related matters, political liaison and managing appointments for the President and Senior Vice President.

The position will manage and develop the Media Officer, manage the publication of the Union’s quarterly magazine Police News and further develop and support communications within and across the business.

The position also provides EA support to the President, Senior Vice President and Board Members; secretariat services to the Board including Minute recording, motion crafting and distribution of Agenda and Minutes to Board Members; and ensures that the President, Senior Vice President and Board are well supported and coordinated administratively.

The position will assist the Secretary with the coordination of Annual Conference and manage the delivery of other WAPU Events such as the Annual Retirement Dinner and the WAPU Recruit Functions.

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism and/or public affairs, media, marketing, communications, or public relations.
  • Demonstrated experience in corporate communications with the ability to develop, implement and manage internal and external communication and marketing plans and strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience in Media Management including preparation of media releases, statements and talking points.
  • Well-developed organisational skills, including prioritising competing demands to meet required deadlines.
  • Previous experience in working with partners and sponsors to implement key deliverables.
  • Previous experience managing events including liaison with suppliers, venues, media, attendees and talent.
  • Well-developed computer skills. Proficiency with photoshop style programs and video editing highly desirable.

This is a full time, permanent position with a six-month probation period and the salary range is $90,000 to $100,000 plus superannuation.

The successful applicant will need to provide a National Police Clearance.
