In response to the McGowan Government’s inaction over pay, conditions and additional police officers, WAPU is instructing Members to escalate industrial action today.

Effective from 7am on Tuesday, 15 August 2017, WAPU has instructed all Members to extend Phase Two of the campaign.

WAPU is instructing all Prosecutors in Magistrates Courts to not seek police costs associated with arrests and summons. Legal advice sought by WAPU endorses this action.

President George Tilbury said this action will impact on the financial position of the Government.

“At a cost of $190.85 per summons and $100.00 for arrest matters, WAPU expects this action alone to cost the Government around $100,000 each day that it does not commit to improving pay, conditions and recruiting more officers,” Mr Tilbury said.

Members are also instructed to close police station doors if two police officers are not available to attend front counter duties at night.

“If a member of the public attends a police station during these times and requires immediate assistance for a life threatening matter, backup will be requested from the nearest vehicle. Community safety will not be compromised,” Mr Tilbury said.

Mr Tilbury said it was a risk to officer safety if they do not have back up readily available.

“A number of previous incidents have put Members at police stations in serious danger. There have already been four major incidents at police stations this year, including an incident at Gosnells Police Station where an officer was stabbed.

“There have also been drive-by shootings outside Armadale and Rockingham Police Stations, firebombings, vehicles driven through front doors, offenders on the roof and in the yard, as well as officers’ vehicles being damaged.”

This action will also target the Labor election promise to extend the opening hours of certain police stations, without having fully resourced them.

“Actions to date have had a significant effect on Government consolidated revenue. In the first 12 days of our campaign, there were 7,000 less traffic infringements handed out,” Mr Tilbury said.

ABS data indicates the average traffic infringement cost is $400, so Government is losing $233,333 every day that it chooses not to resolve this issue.

“The cost of sorting this out would have been significantly less than the financial loss it has suffered to date, which will only get worse.

“By combining our action, the total financial loss to Government will now exceed $300,000 per day.

This action also comes after the Government increased GROH rent in regional WA by $1560 per year.

“We will continue our campaign until the Government takes notice and offers police officers what they deserve,” he said.
