The WA Police Union condemns the recent sentencing of our member, Alister Swift, which we believe to be manifestly excessive. The outcome of this case raises significant concerns for the policing community and possible future implications.

The sentencing raises troubling implications for police officers who, in the line of duty, must make rapid decisions concerning the use of force when apprehending individuals. This sentence sets a precedent that could cause officers to second-guess their actions, potentially impacting their ability to perform their duties effectively and ensure public safety.

It is evident that our member, Alister Swift, is being made an example of in this case. This unjust verdict does not account for the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers in high-pressure situations.

WA Police Union President, Paul Gale says the WA Police Union is deeply concerned about the broader implications of this sentencing.

“We stand in solidarity with our member and all police officers affected by this incident.

“In response to this concerning verdict, the WA Police Union is actively engaging with our legal team to explore the possibility of appealing this sentence. We are committed to ensuring that the rights and fair treatment of our members are upheld and that justice prevails in these circumstances.

“We will continue to advocate for the protection of our officers and the maintenance of their ability to carry out their duties effectively and within the confines of the law”, says Mr Gale.
